I’ve found a little bit of an issue with self-care in my own journey & it’s this:
Self-care is kinda the practice that comes into place when life takes us by the hand & nearly drowns us in stress, anxiety, & whatever else it possibly can. Usually, when we take time to do self-care, it’s because we’re up to our necks with junk that we don’t even know how to handle anymore, right?!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve willingly just decided to take care of myself on a day that I’m feeling fully capable & care-free. I finally get the hint that it’s time to take care of me when I am on the verge of burn-out, which is SooOOOoooo not how it’s supposed to be.
Can we all just shake ourselves out of this silly thing & take care of ourselves before we’re on the verge of a mental breakdown???
This little trick I’ve learned feels like the biggest life hack ever, but it’s not always the easiest thing.
Just choose to be self-aware.
Here’s the deal…
You spend 24 hours a day with yourself. Every second of every day you’re in on the things brewing inside your head.
Why do I say this?
Because burnout doesn’t hit you out of nowhere.
A dreadfully long to-do list doesn’t pop up randomly.
An overwhelming project doesn’t come up at the snap of a finger.
You get the idea… Sure, some things happen out of the blue, but 9 times out of 10, we have a little bit of an idea of what we’re in for, yet we forget to be proactive in taking care of ourselves.
& that’s the root of the whole dang problem.
Choose you sometimes. Yeah, you gotta get your work done & do all the everyday things, but you shouldn’t have to crash & burn because you were so focused on those things instead of your health & sanity.
Feel yourself getting stressed? Take a break. Know that you have a rough week coming up? Plan ahead to have designated time off. Been in a season of hustle? Treat yourself.
I don’t know why we play this game where we just keep going until we can’t anymore, but it doesn’t work. It’s just not a sustainable lifestyle. Listen to yourself, girl.
Take a break, even if it means you’re not gonna get your paper done in the amount of time you originally wanted to. Put things off so you can bring you to the front burner every once in a while. You’re worth that. THAT is self-care.
